The Fire Service

Wirs was a member of the Chalfont Vol. Fire Co., assigned to the North Branch which housed a 1942 Maxim pumper (taken out of mothballs) to accommodate growth in New Britain Township.   * * *  During the administration of Phila. Law Enforcement

Wirs was twice elected Constable for the City of Harrisburg, 4th Ward, which bailiwick includes the PA State Capitol. Wirs sought to implement reforms, but got severe pushback from the "courthouse gang" resulting in a bad faith prosecution. Nonetheless, the voters fought back, renominating Wirs in both the 2003 Democratic and Republican primaries by write-in. Wirs is the author of I Shot the Constable, but I didn't Shoot the Deputy, an analysis of the history and modern-day legal issues regarding the Nation's first law enforcement office.

Municipal Leadership

Wirs was responsible for increasing the New Britain Township Board of Supervisors membership from three to five to accommodate the township's population growth. He was chairman of the township's Bicentennial Commission and a member of the Parks & Recreation Commission.

Republican Leadership

Wirs was part of the reform movement of the Phila. City Republican Committee, and served as the Secretary of the City Republican Committee for one term. He was first the 59th Republican Ward Chairman and then the 59th Republican Ward Leader.  Wirs began his political involvement as the New Britain Twp. Republican Chairman from 1973 to 1977.
